Wales cityscape

Welcome

The Joint Inspection Team (JIT) for Building Safety (Wales) Ltd operates with funding and support from the Welsh Government and the Welsh Local Government Association. Our mission is as exciting as it is challenging - we are committed to enhancing the safety of multi-occupied residential buildings in Wales. To achieve this, we have formed a dynamic partnership with Fire and Rescue Authorities (FRAs) and Local Authorities (LAs).

At JIT, we believe in the power of collaboration and joint working. We operate as a tightly-knit, multi-disciplinary team, working in unison with LAs and FRAs. Our primary objective is to inspect, assess, and offer expert guidance and support. Our dedicated efforts are geared towards achieving a safer built environment for all.

Here, you will find valuable information about our mission, vision, and the progress we are making. Join us on our journey to create a safer, more secure living environment for communities across Wales. Together, we can make a real difference in building safety.

The Team will bring additional capacity to inspections of multi-occupied residential buildings. A programme of inspections is currently under development. The team will act in an advisory capacity and will not have enforcement powers. However, it will provide advice and make recommendations to existing enforcement authorities, including real-time reporting on issues of significant concern, detailed reports to enforcement authorities, post-inspection meetings, and reviews with the host Local Authority and relevant Fire and Rescue Service.

The Joint Inspection Team will also highlight the offer of Welsh Government-funded intrusive surveys, to encourage more expressions of interest to the Building Safety Fund from building owners/managing agents. Further information on the Welsh Building Safety Fund can be found here:

About Us

The Joint Inspection Team for Building Safety in Wales (JIT) has been established to enhance the safety of multi-occupied residential buildings across Wales. This initiative comes in response to the strong support garnered during the consultation on the "Safer Buildings in Wales" proposal. The JIT is an additional resource aimed at improving the inspection capacity of local authorities and fire and rescue services.

Our Mission

The primary mission of the JIT is to provide advisory support to local authorities and fire and rescue services. This multi-disciplinary team, consisting of experts in building control, environmental health, fire and rescue, and fire engineering, will collaborate to conduct thorough inspections and provide detailed recommendations for safety improvements.

Our Approach

The JIT will operate in close collaboration with local authorities and fire and rescue services to develop a comprehensive risk profile for high-rise buildings in Wales. A risk-based methodology will guide the selection of buildings for inspection, ensuring a focus on the highest risk structures.
